Founded in 1951, the University of International Business and Economics is directly under the Ministry of Education and eligible to enjoy the preferential development policies laid out in Project 211. It offers a range of ten foreign language programs which have a long history. The English program, one of the most important and influential programs of the university, is run by the School of International Studies (SIS). The School encompasses the Language and Literature Department, the Translation Studies Department, the Business English Department and the General English Studies Department. Besides, it operates six research institutes—the Theoretical Linguistics Research Institute, the Applied Linguistics Research Institute, the English and American Literature Research Institute, the Translation & Interpretation Research Institute, the Research Institute of English Culture, and the Business English Research Institute. The English program enrolls 480 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students every year. As one of the first master’s degree granting units approved by the Chinese government in 1978, SIS has offered graduate programs for near 30 years. So far, it owns first-level disciplines authorized to grant master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literature and runs two graduate programs, i.e., English Language and Literature and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, having more than 540 graduates on a cumulative basis. Over the past five decades, the English program has always been dedicated to training high-quality, versatile talents with an international profile. Its graduates are holding important positions in national and international organizations such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, overseas embassies and consulates of China, the United Nations, financial institutions, large state-owned companies, and large joint ventures.
