Xi’an International Studies University is one of the four oldest institutions of higher learning established to offer foreign language teaching in China and also the only university in Northwest China that runs a full range of foreign language programs. It featured prominently on the priority list of the “12th Five-year Plan.” In 1986, with the approval of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, the University became authorized to grant master’s degrees. In 2011, it was listed by the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province as one of the high-level key universities in the “12th Five-year Plan.” In January 2013, it was authorized to award doctor’s degrees in first-level foreign language disciplines upon the approval of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. With more than six decades’ construction and development, the University has shifted from a specialized foreign language teaching institution to a multi-disciplinary university that takes humanities at its core and seeks for the coordinated development of social, management and science disciplines at the same time. As a major base in West China dedicated to fostering talents in foreign languages, it plays an indispensable role in foreign language education, teaching and research in the Northwest region.
