LocWorld 2017: Data Facilitates Communication, AI Catalyzes Scenario-based Language Cognitive Applications

On March 1-2, 2017, the 33rd LocWorld themed as “Continuous Delivery” was held in Shenzhen with the attendance of more than 500 representatives from industry giants such as Google, Alibaba and IBM. This year’s event featured a series of sub-forums revolving around an array of topics including Advanced Localization Management, Global Business, and Translation Automation. On March 2, the sub-forum “Future of Language Service under AI” held by Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “GTCOM”) attracted wide attention among hundreds of industry experts and scholars on the occasion.

At the sub-forum, Guoqing YAN, GTCOM Overseas Business Director and Wenye LI, Research Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and Research Fellow at Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, discussed with the guests present on a series of topics including AI (Artificial Intelligence), machine translation, big data, and the future of the language service industry. In Mr. Yan’s speech on “AI + MT & Big Data—the Globalization Enabler for Business,” he noted that when news and information gathered from all parts of the world are communicated in a cross-language, real-time and big data manner, enterprises during their globalization process are facing with two challenges: How to break the language barriers and acquire real-time data across the world to make prompt decisions.. In response to these challenges, GTCOM has built up the YeeCloud and YeeSight platforms featuring language and big data analytical capabilities for global users.

According to Mr. Li, language processing is one of the most challenging issues in the field of AI. The latest solution by combining AI and big data has brought hopes, as machine translation can help tackle many language difficulties and catalyze more innovative applications. Moreover, Mr. Li believed that data also plays a critical role in the development of the industry by speeding up the advancement of AI technology with expected results.

Additionally, Mr. Yan and Mr. Li highlighted the collaborative development of language, big data and AI, which was essential to the language service industry as more challenges would be brought along with the advancement of big data and AI technologies.
